Basic Surgical Skills
A "hands on" practical course giving instruction on basic surgical skills necessary for the foundation of good surgical practice for the dental graduate working in the specialty of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.
Practical Ward Skills
A lecture and ward based course providing an overview of ward skills necessary for the dental graduate working in the capacity of a Senior House Officer in the Specialty of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.
Course Programme

Basic Surgical Skills
- Instrument recognition and handling
- Knot tying
- Suturing
- Haemostasis and the use of diathermy
- Wound management
- Principles of minor oral surgery
- Bone plating
- Principles of skin reconstruction

Practical Ward Skills
- History and examination of the cardiovascular, respiratory, gastrointestinal and central nervous systems.
- Interpretation of chest radiography
- Management of diabetes in the surgical patient
- Perioperative complications
- Practical aspects of ECG monitoring, tracheostomy care, blood pressure monitoring, intravenous cannulation and fluid administration, arterial blood gases and urinary catheterisation.
